The Bridge opens day two at the Bridgekeeper’s cabin. The Wanderer completes his account which leads from late-‘70s political disappointment, divorce and a disastrous attempt to give up on changing the world; through recuperation while picking apples in the orchards of Washington State; to three more trans-continental Walks and a second marriage. The intellectual journey revolves around the discovery of important tools for change in Post-Modernist theory.

The Bridge elaborates this theme by introducing a new narrative level. Throughout the day, the Bridgekeeper keeps recalling cartoon-like scenes from her last night’s dream. These vignettes playfully explore concepts such as the relationship between words and anything outside the sign system. As another day dawns, the Bridgekeeper shows the Wanderer the way to the bridge. The book ends with the crossing.
